Mexican pizza is returning to Taco Bell’s menu, the fast-food chain announced on April 18, and it’s going to stay for good.
The fan-favorite hasn’t been available since 2020, when Taco Bell retired it – along with other items – in a bid to ‘revamp’ the chain’s menu to be more eco-friendly , reported McClatchy News.
“Removing it from our menus helps us deliver on our commitment to leave a lighter footprint on our planet,” the company said at the time. “Currently, Mexican pizza packaging represents over 7 million pounds of cardboard per year in the United States”
But Taco Bell promises to bring back Mexican pizza, with greener wrappers, starting May 19.
The chain attributes fan outcry to the pizza’s return, citing a Change.org petition that has attracted nearly 200,000 signatures.
Part of the appeal of Mexican pizza is that it is a tasty vegetarian option – a rare thing in fast food.
“Like many American Indians who grew up vegetarians, we had limited access to ‘fun’ fast food, so Taco Bell became a bridge to belonging in American culture for many kids like me who grew up in immigrant homes,” Krish Jagirdar said. , who started the petition.
The Mexican pizza will be $4.49 when it returns to the menu in May.
“Our menu is full of fan favorites, but Mexican pizza tops the list,” said Mark King, CEO of Taco Bell. “From his flashy introduction to menus in 1985 as ‘Pizzazz Pizza’ to his inspiration behind the creation of infamous jingles, Mexican Pizza has a long history with the brand and I’m glad we were able to give fans what they crave and bring our classic Mexican pizza home.
