LEGO baseplates for durable packaging, new set numbers [News] | The Brick of the Brothers
Today, LEGO announced that they will update the packaging on the stand-alone baseplates to use durable paper packaging instead of the thin plastic sleeves in which the parts are currently sold. The new packaging is expected to be available from next year, and LEGO will be releasing new set numbers for baseplates that use the updated packaging. The company says it has no plans to shut down any of the baseplates. This follows last year’s announcement of LEGO’s broader sustainability initiatives, including a planned shift to paper instead of plastic bags inside sets, a movement set to begin this year. We haven’t seen any paper bags in the sets yet, so it’s not clear if this rollout has been delayed or may still appear in the sets before the end of the year.

Here is the official statement from LEGO:
Over the next few months, you will likely see products with the “retiring soon” brand or perhaps a local retailer reporting that they are no longer able to order certain products. We want to share in advance that there is no need to be alarmed about the base plates.
In 2022, baseplates will transition from their current plastic packaging to more sustainable paper packaging. Other than the packaging, there are no additional changes with the LEGO baseplates and you will still be able to get the same colors and sizes in 2022 that you can buy today. You can expect to see the new packaging around March 1, 2022.
